About Ice dams
An ice dam is nothing more than ice that is creating a water dam on a roof. As the water dams, it flows up the roof and under the shingles rather than down the roof as it should. This dam is caused by a temperature difference on the roof. Snow melts somewhere on the roof where the temperature is relatively high. As that melted snow flows down the roof it freezes if it encounters an area that is significantly cooler. The melting and freezing cycle accumulates and a dam is formed. In general, these dams occur on the eves of a house. This is because the eves are not receiving any heat through the ceiling as the rest of the roof is.

About Ice Dam Science
We call ourselves Ice Dam Science because, with our background as a residential building contractor, we have complete, scientific understanding of residential buildings, and the ice dams that form on them. This is not the case with most companies. Throughout our years in the residential services industry, we have seen over and over again how important it is to understand the complete building structure and all its layers when doing work on houses. Every year we inform customers that we found improperly installed roof components that will cause leaks, getting them off the ice dam merry-go-round once and for all. Protect your castle, trust the science.
